Austrailians banking on Oscar nominations

THERE is growing expectation Australia might earn a swag of Academy Award nominations when they are announced on February 2. Word from Hollywood already has South Australian animated film The Cat Piano certain to be nominated after it made the short list of 10 culled from 37 qualifying shorts. Prospects are good for the film, directed by The People's Republic of Animation's Eddie White and Ari Gibson. Narrated by Nick Cave, it has already won prizes at the Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney film festivals. The film industry expects Samson & Delilah, Mary and Max and Abbie Cornish to nab Oscar nominations across different categories.
IN another Academy Award cull, the academy's documentary branch named its short list of 15, which will be cut again to five. This year the category has snubbed a number of high-profile contenders.
